When money is tight, you can save money easily by clipping coupons, even if it seems old-fashioned. It takes some strategic planning, but finding and using coupons correctly can save you hundreds of dollars.
Plot Your Method
When using coupons, it can be easy to fall into the trap of buying an item you would usually not use. The first step is to decide what items you need to purchase for the next week or month. Make a shopping list that includes everything you might need.
Scrutinize Your List
Now that you know what items you are shopping for, get a copy of the local Sunday newspaper or go online. Figure out which stores are having sales, specials, or are offering the best prices. Plan out your shopping list for the best prices and lowest traveling distance – driving to multiple stores could use all the money you save.
Research Available Coupons
Once you know where the items you need are on sale, start researching coupons. The internet can be one of the best sources for coupons, next to your local newspaper. Signing up for an email newsletter from a company will often get you an emailed coupon. There are also multiple websites that act as coupon clearinghouses. On some websites, you may be asked to pay between 10 and 50 cents per coupon. Note any expiration dates or limitations on the coupons.
Double down to increase your savings
Once you have gotten together coupons and sales, you can start matching them to your shopping list. If a store has a two-for-one sale, match it up with a coupon from the manufacturer for a better price. If the store is offering a coupon, you can frequently match it with another coupon from the manufacturer. Matching coupons with one another can save you even more money.
Have flexible plans
There will be times that you will really find killer deals on items not on your shopping list. If you do find an item with an amazing deal, make sure you will actually use whatever the item is. Be willing to alter your list to include whatever is on special that you will use. To keep yourself organized, keep a month-long list of meals, and then just cross them off as you purchase the items for them.
Take yourself shopping
It is time to go shopping once you’ve got both your plan and your coupons organized. While you are out shopping, it’s important to keep your eyes open for unadvertised specials. Keep a file of coupons with you, so you can double-down in the future. Importantly, your impulse purchases need to be kept to a minimum. It won’t help save any money on your shopping list if you purchase items you don’t need.
Coupon clipping and take extra time and effort – but in the end, the money you could end up saving is worth it. Just be sure to research, plan, and be flexible.
